Dear Journal,

I, William Mandel, have had enough of Senator McCarthy and his supporters. He is accusing many people of being communists and doesn't even need to back it up! The jury accepts the decision without hard evidence. So, if, and when, I am tried for my "crimes," I will simply not answer his questions, and plead the fifth. He may still get me in jail, but he will never get me to sing, considering I have not committed any crimes, nor am I a member of the Communist party. If I do respond to McCarthy in a such a manner, I do believe that it may inspire others to do so. If we do not give McCarthy what he wants, he can't do anything else than what he is already planning on doing to us. So, I know that I can help stop McCarthy once and for all, and save thousands of innocent workers from being blacklisted for something they didn't do.

-William

Dear Journal,

My trial is tomorrow, and I do know that I cannot prove myself innocent. However, if i do deploy my strategy, I will feel a personal sense of accomplishment. There are no major consequences to what I will be doing, other than getting big bad Mr. McCarthy angry at me for striking a blow at his ego. That is my main motivation for doing this act of civil disobedience: to upset McCarthy and really to help discredit his methods. Once I do this, he will easily lose authority and everyone will rejoyce.

-William

Dear Journal,

Well, I have done it! I have now become blacklisted due to the trial. Many people may disregard my books as tools of Communism, but I could care less, because I have accomplished my goal. McCarthy looked like a complete fool, according to many of my friends and family watching the trial, when he would ask the same ridiculous question many times, and I would simply plead the fifth. I did recieve a bit of noteriety for this, but I hope it passes through to the minds of other people going on trial quickly, because they can learn from me and use my same strategy to help wipe any credibility from McCarthy once and for all.

-William

Dear Journal,

Looking back on this act that I have performed while in my trial, I do realize that it was actually quite fun. I was in a stuffy room with an egotistical brute that was pretending to be saving America by falsely accusing me of being a Communist. But, at every point where he would try to trick me into admitting something like that, I would simply plead the fifth. This strategy was passed down to many others, and finally, McCarthy's era was done. People realized that was completely unconstitutional, and helped stand up against it. This was absolutely worth it, because it was a huge success.
